Yes, that ugly plum sweater will make you look fat. These are the rambling of your friendly cashier.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.comBlogger26125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-84193412422128762842009-06-06T14:12:00.005-04:002009-06-06T14:38:52.791-04:00Martha Stewart is the devil.....It's 5 minutes till closing. You can physically see the employees release the almighty sigh of relief. After a long and tedious two-day inventory, we are all a step away from retail death.

A petite women with long blonde pigtails races through the door like a platapus on cocaine. Every employee within a foot of the service desk, shoots visual daggers at the back of her head.

Now, skip ahead 10 minutes. The manager makes the announcement that the store is CLOSED. In my head, the overall message sounded something like, "Hey loser who is still in the store. Get the hell out before I release these starving workers on you. No, seriously, buy something or go..."

The lady marches up and promptly screams, "I'm here for the Mayor! She needs purple pillows! It's for the MAYOR!"

Skip ahead another 10 minutes where she is still frantically searching the store screaming something about the f-ing mayor and purple pillows. Yeah, we are being held against our will after closing, for purple pillows....20 minutes over, to be exact.

I have waaaaayyyy too many anger issues for this lady. I don't care if she's there for Barack Obama....why is she shopping for purple pillows at a low end crappy retail store??? We have one automatic door that is shattered because a lady in the electric wheelchair went the wrong way and slammed into it. Does that sound like a place the Mayor would shop?

The manager shakes her head and herds the cattle of a women to the checkouts and allows the employees to leave before they started throwing piles of crap at her.

I bet my whole paycheck this lady not only DIDN'T work for the mayor, but used those pillows in some drive-by pillow gang war. Martha Stewart being the fashionable godfather figure.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-79177665072020432002009-05-10T11:41:00.002-04:002009-05-10T11:59:09.942-04:00Mama, Don't let your babies grow up...to be assholes. The day before Mother's Day. Blinded by foolishness, I had convinced myself that today would no worse then any other day. Apparently, 'Mother's Day' is code for "Treat your Cashiers like crap because you were too lazy to get your mom stuff ahead of time."

My register had been swamped the entire day. Breathing was becoming a thing of the past and my movements were almost robotic. A heavier set man walks through and buys the usual stuff for mama dearest. Flowers? Check. Cheesy Card? Check. Creepy Teddy Bear? Check.

He pays with a credit card. Luckily for me, all the debit card swipers machines have crashed and burned, so we are forced to hand scan them ourselves. The man pays with a credit card and because of some weird glitch, I have to imprint the card.

Everything goes through fine. I hand the man his receipt and am off to the next loser. Three transactions later, I see that the man is still lurking next to my register.

"Sir, Can I help you?"

"What are you trying to pull bitch?"

"Excuse me?"

"Listen, I may look like a fool, but I'm not. I know what your doing. I've already had my identity stolen once and I'm not going to let some C*** like you screw up my credit again. Consider yourself fired you dumb bitch!"

I look at the man in complete shock. First of all, I don't put up with being called anything. Secondly, had the store manager (the big dog, as we refer to her) not been at the service desk behind me...I might have smothered the man with a Joe Boxer pillow.

My register is completely in need of dollar bills, so I walk the 2 feet to get change and there he is. The asshole is trying to get the attention of the manager and when he sees me promptly says, "Nope, you're dismissed little lady. Go back to your register."

Later, the BIG DOG manager walks by me and inquires about the incident. She laughs when she gets my side.

"I could tell he was a loon the minute he walked up. Don't worry about it."

Why, yes! I was indeed stealing your identity sir. All my life, I've wanted to be a fat bald man with one tooth and a lazy eye. It's my dream, really. Damn you for ruining the American dream, you prick.
Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-72941594235102993492009-05-09T13:12:00.002-04:002009-05-09T13:29:21.134-04:00Oops! Did I drop that brick on your face?I've only taken two steps into work, not even having the chance to clock in, and like a raging bull, the security guard wanna-be runs up to me.

"You see that girl in softlines with the polka-dotted dress? She, the old lady, and the three guys with her are being watched for shoplifting."

"And?"

" 'BOB' says you need to keep an eye on them and report what you see."

"Tell 'Bob' that I don't get paid enough to be a hero. Unless he's got a $5 bonus in his back pocket, I don't care what they steal."

The guy looks at me, shrugs, and just strolls away. Seriously? Like I've got that much time on my hands to play '007 at some crappy retail store.

2 hours later, Manager 'Bob' pages me over the intercom. I trudge up to service desk to find 5 (yes, 5) carts overflowing with stuff. Turns out, the people knew we were watching them and just to be good citizens, they decided to get $2200 worth of stuff and then have the check declined.

So who has to clean the mess up? Why, yes....the poor floor workers. Softlines had a buggy stacked as high as me with random clothes. They even took the time to put ALL the candles on the shelf in their shopping cart.

These are the people I wish serious karma. Really? $2200 worth the stuff and you pretend to be shocked at the declining of your check? Screw you. They were lucky it wasn't me that had to check out all their stuff. There really is no telling what kinda names I would come up with to call them.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-42962385490707357202009-05-04T20:50:00.002-04:002009-05-04T21:04:07.181-04:00Softlines 101For the last month, I've been on a 'trial' in the softlines (women's, men's, infants clothes). I had been doing well, by my standards at least...which are incredible low. I have grown quite fond of the infants section. Not because it has cute little dresses or tinsy winsy lil booties...just cause it's the smallest department in my store. Yep, my standards are quite the mind blower.

Yesterday, I'm at the fitting room desk pretending to fold clothes, when this lady walks up. The next part all happens in what seemed to be a slow-mo Charlie Brown's teacher, A.D.D all fucked up moment. The lady mumbles a blur of nonsense and all I could concentrate on is that something was missing...but what? I just couldn't put my finger on it.

Then, it Chris Brown'd me. The lady had no tongue. Literally, it was just a stub. Shallow of me? Why, yes....yes it was. Don't even pretend like you wouldn't tilt your head and wonder....

I manage to catch the word 'bathroom' and promptly point her towards the back.

Damn creepy retail store in the middle of murder heights. One day, this will all catch up with me, but until then....I will just have to blog it.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-70173907294452548332009-03-15T22:10:00.004-04:002009-03-15T22:24:36.612-04:00Scanning your eyes out...one pupil at a time!I hate my job. Truly, I do. I wish this job death. Friday the 13th, was indeed the shittiest day at my store. I was cursed out by one old fart and told I disgrace my family with my body 'defacement' by another.

The bad part is...there's no where else for me to go. I truly feel that my A.D.D won't allow me to work on the floor. I can't even shop without stopping a thousand times to look at things that are shiny/sparkly/glittery/metallic/etc. I think floor work will only bore me to tears.

What does that leave? Why, yes! Cashiering. In my store, this is known as 'punishment'. Anyone who does something bad, but not Donald Trump, "YOU'RE FIRED!" bad, they are sent to the cubicle of suffering A.K.A....the register. Most either quit or become nuns.

On top of everything, the new store rules are killing me. I can't pass gas without 'Bob' the manager, asking me how that affects the team...and remember kids, "There is no 'I' in 'Shut the Fuck Up You Dumb Ass!'"

*sigh*

I will hanger-whip the next customer who dares tell me to go to church because I have an eyebrow piercing. All you'll see is the zebra print of my uniform spider monkey over the desk and the blurring of a hanger.

*double sigh*

The whole Friday the 13th story later....for now, I need to watch something calming, like 'Little Miss Sunshine' or 'Cloverfield'.

-Cashier-Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-67769461533447452682009-02-19T21:55:00.004-05:002009-02-19T22:52:51.847-05:00So much for "Respect Thy Neighbor"...My store has recently decided to, yet again, take up donations for a local charity. I don't mind the actual idea of it....the problem lies in making the poor cashiers stop our entire routine to ask a question that 9 times outta 10 will be denied. It really throws us off. The register needs a routine. Otherwise, you're just floundering around with your head us off. A friend of mine is a waiter, and he tells me everyday that good waiter will get a routine and stick to it. Cashiering is the same way.

In these hard economic times, it is like asking for your first born. I love the grunts, the excuses, the glares, and most of all, the rants about money. Trust me...we no more enjoy asking then you enjoy hearing the pleas.

This time it was for March of Dimes. I did my usual routine. Managing to get several kind citizens, I felt like I had done my job. Until SHE showed up.

"Hello Ma'm! How are you?"

*Grunt*

*I silently scan her items* "Would you like to donate a dollar to the March of Dimes?"

Before I could finish my sentence this old, hateful women, released her walker....through her hands up in the air and screamed til she was blue in the face, "NOOOOOO MAAAAAAAA'M!!!!!"

It was so loud, that my manager ran from the back of the store to the front to see what the commotion was. My face contorted into a swirl of confusion and "Piss off lady!". I finally handed her her bags and watched her scoot away into the sunset.

It took me a good 5 minutes t0 fully digest what had just occured. Charity got me yelled at.

Life's great irony.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-34639553957721963742009-02-17T18:46:00.003-05:002009-02-17T18:56:23.812-05:00My Sticky...sticky shoes....It's finally happened. I have a cold. I've managed the whole season to avoid the symptoms, but alas, I finally caught it.

Most of my shift went as smoothly as possible. In between customers, I popped cough drops and tried to get some fluids down.

A large man, wearing overalls that were 4 sizes too small with no shirt underneath, trudges to my line. Covering my mouth to shield unwanted floaters, I cough.

The man stops dead in his tracks and wide-eyed, stares at me with dismay.

"It's all clear, sir! I promise."

Like a deer caught in headlights, he keeps his eyes on me. Finally, he grunts and proclaims, "I'm not going through YOUR line. Your germ-y! You should be ashamed of yourself coming to work to give all these folks your germs!"

He waddles to the next line and refuses to take his eyes off of me until he is out the door.

Who knew my cold would turn out to be my blessing. Perhaps I should be like Pheobe off of 'Friends' and make some money off of it. (Remember that episode?)Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-36045226342735832462009-01-19T17:33:00.004-05:002009-01-19T17:52:09.894-05:00Burn my bra! It's gonna be one of those days!I absolutely LOVE the people who blame cashier's for all the problems in the store. If the dressing room is messy, it's the cashier's problem. If the coke machine is out of Diet Coke, it's the cashier's fault.

A large, sweaty man with one lazy eye walks through my line with Shout cleaner and something man-like for cars. Scanning both, I read out the total to him. At first, he begins to thumb through his wallet for the cash, but then, as if his internal lightbulb prematurely flickered, he demands that I do a price check on the Shout.

"There was a HUGE sign in the back that said $2! What kinda scam are you trying to pull lady?"

Without any emotion, I trudge to the phone and call housewears. Before I can even explain the product, the man turns a rare shade of purple and storms to the back, shouting at me to hold his spot the whole way back.

The poor people waiting behind him, nervously shuffle and sigh knowing this is going to be one of 'those' types of customers.

He returns empty handed while I'm on the phone with the associate who explained to him that the $2 was for a generic brand next to it. The man takes one look at me and unleashes a river of hatred towards me.

"It's not a MAN's job to have to read signs. It's a woman's! I had to have some BOY tell me that you all are crooks. This place is ridiculous! You have MEN doing women's jobs all around here! Folding clothes and scanning shit! Why...if times were like that of my grand-pappy, I would have a women tell me the price and I would get the Shout for $2 because it's obviously a mistake made by her to get my hard earned money! I'm a bread winner, so I won't put up with this kind of thievery!"

Needless to say, it was nothing but a scene to say the least. It didn't help that after all that, the lady behind him and to say, "I agree whole heartedly. The man should do the man's work and the women...women's."

After giving him his 'hard earned' change, I monotonously do my usual, "Have a nice day, sir."

My friend at the register behind me had to literally put a hand on my shoulder to keep from lunging at his face when he smirked, "Wow, I really got you hot and heavy, didn't I?"

I hope a women is the one to take him outta this world....because that is a WOMEN's job! ;)
Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-85751302434346488832009-01-17T22:20:00.004-05:002009-01-17T22:46:02.855-05:00Something says High School Musical won't pick this story up...This story will seem unreal and down-right crazy to 90% of the people who read this, but I can assure you, I shit you not.

I punch in at 10:30, thrilled to even be working. Even better, the other two cashiers are friends of mine. Yeah!

My first customer is a girl about my age (18-19) who purchased a variety pack of Trojan Condoms. From the get go, she seemed a bit twitchy, but really? Isn't everyone a bit twitchy when buying condoms at 10:30 in the morning??? Anywho, she pays for them and leaves.

An hour or two later, a boy no older the 5, comes through asking if he could return something. I redirected him to the Customer Service desk and thought nothing of it. My manager comes racing towards my register and says,

"Did YOU sell a 5 year old condoms???"

I must have given my "Huh?" face, because she burst into a grin and explained. The 5 year old that had come through was returning condoms that had been bought through my line earlier.

Now, I don't memorize who all buys what, but I know that I had only scanned one box of THAT particular item. Yeah...cashiers remember those sort of purchases.

Later on, we were able to get the story out of the boy. Turns out that the sister had bought the Trojans for HIM!!! The boy decided he'd rather have the money for a video game and that's where the return came in.

Crazy, isn't it? We live in a world where 5 year olds are bought condoms. Looks like parents are bringing a whole new meaning to the word, "Over-Protective".Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-33395155114349812022009-01-16T22:28:00.003-05:002009-01-16T23:05:07.169-05:00There's no need to fear! Underpaid is here!Thursday morning, I drag my corpse of a body to my last class of the day. The whole campus resembles a scene from "Dawn of the Dead". Groans of anguish echo throughout the hallways.

Opening the door to my Prob & Stats class, I hear a familiar voice beckoning from behind me. Turning, I see the face of one of the few coworkers I like. He, like myself, seems to live to be the reject of our store.

"Hey hon! I haven't seen you in forever. Where you been?"

"They cut my hours. Amazing, isn't it? The holidays arrive and we are worked to the bone. Then it leaves, and we're pushed to the side like bad puppies. They've got to hurry up and get our schedule back to normal."

"I know...I am thinking about looking elsewhere. I mean, I can't afford to pay for tuition, my car payment, and rent with 9 hours each week."

"Trust me. I understand. If all else fails, I say we storm the place and blackmail them to work us. It's an unusual approach, but someone has to do it, right?"

He chuckles a little. His good humor allows him the ability to see right through my sarcasm. Others might have reported me to the authorities, but this guy, is on to me.

"D, you should have a blog about the things that go on in your life. It would amaze people at the complexity you call, "Everyday"."

Now it's my turn to laugh. I keep this blog as secretive as possible. I don't want anyone to know who I am or where I work for fear of getting fired....or worse...dealing with the managers.

"You're completely right. Luckily, I'm just not into 'blogging'. I guess you'll have to pitch your idea to someone else. How about "Bob"???"

"As if he even knows what the internet is! His blog would be on stone and read by Moses and the baby Jesus!"

We exchange farewells and part ways, leaving only the feeling of being some sort of secret agent left in my creaking bones. Student by day, Cashier by Dusk, Blogger by Midnight. There's nothing she can't do....or make into a humorous paragraph!Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-82743903507900519462009-01-13T11:34:00.005-05:002009-01-13T12:01:24.723-05:00Alex, I'll take "Things that cross the line" for $200."I know, right? As soon as she said she was getting her lip pierced, I couldn't resist!"

My co-cashier worker friend and I were chatting it up a couple minutes before the store closed. The topic of choice? My decision to get my eyebrow pierced. When a customer would walk through, we'd immediately hush, but that didn't stop one lady from giving her views.

"You're getting your eyebrow pierced?"

I look at her a bit skeptical of where this conversation was going, but I'm like the Indiana Jones of cashiers.

"Yeah, tomorrow I'm going with a friend. I'm a bit nervous about the pain, but I think I'll be fine."

In an instance, the middle aged women cups her breast and says like a true saint, "Last year, I had both my nipples done! It was the BEST decision of my life!"

Red faced, I give her the change, and fake a Customer Service desk problem that needs my assistance. If I've typed it once, I'll type it a thousand more times...cashier's like talking to you, we just don't want to know EVERYTHING about you. We're perfectly content with knowing the bare minimum.

Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-7713574751829289712009-01-10T12:43:00.005-05:002009-01-10T12:50:29.054-05:00Robert Frost, You've got some competition!I had a major connection with a four year old at my work awhile ago.

Before this story, though, I should give the back story. Friday night, while I was at work, my parakeet, Isabelle, grew another pair of wings and went to Birdie Heaven. It would have been a year next week that I had had her. Naturally, I balled my eyes out. Saturday morning, I just kept looking at Fernando (Isabelle's spanish lover) in his cage and realized that he too looked sad.I had to be at work by 5.

So there I was, still in mourning, scanning diapers at KMart. That's when it happened...This lady dragged her four year old son to the counter while I did the usual routine.

Scan....Bag.....Scan.....Bag.....Scan....Bag....Price Check...Scan...Bag....

The boy looks up at me and in an instance we had a major connection. Without even a hint of hesitation, the conversation went something like this:

Boy: Hey.

D: Hey.

Boy: Your name really D****?

D: Yep.

Boy: So it's not short for anything?

D: Nope.

Boy: I knew a D****. It was short for something.

D: It happens.

*silence*

Boy: My fish died.

D: My bird died.

Boy: Yeah. What kinda bird was it?

D: Parakeet. What kinda fish was it?

Boy: Koi.

*silence*

D: What did your fish die of?

Boy: Cancer. What did your bird die of?

D: Don't know.

*more silence*

Boy: You know animals just die, right? It happens.

D: *stares* Yeah, well... it shouldn't.

*Silence x12*

Boy: You can't blame yourself. I don't blame myself for flipper dying.

D: Flipper is a fish. Isabelle was a living being. She was like my sister from another mister....You know?

Boy: Word.

----------------------------------------------

That four year old kid will be the next Ghandi....or Snoop Dogg. It's been 2 weeks since they cut my hours and I am ill over it. Never in a million years did I ever think I'd miss the black hole of death, but I do. I miss the few coworkers that make me laugh and the money. Oh, how I miss the minimum wage money.

At my store, there are three people that are what we small cashier's call, "The Big Dogs". One of them I've mentioned before under the alias, "Bob". The other two are older women, one of which has made it very well known that she wishes me death, and the other has taken it upon herself to be my Retail Mentor.

So that means 2 out the 3 hate me more then Black Friday and the other one wants to adopt me. Good odds, right?

My "Mentor" called me Tuesday morning and begged me to work. One of the daytime newbies had up and quit, leaving them without a cashier for nearly 2 hours. Let's be frank, I need the money. They could call me at 2 A.M and I'd go in. It's that bad. I accepted the extra hours with open arms.

The shift was dead for awhile. A few early risers walked through, but that was it. "Mentor" decides that since I'm enjoying the quiet, this would be the perfect time to give me my first evaluation.

Ahhhh, yes. The ole', "Come in and save us from going under!" trick got me again! Dang, she's good.

The evaluation went well. My strength's were that I had a awesomely friendly attitude (which means great customer service skills) and got work done when told. My weakness? I don't trust myself to answer questions from customers. In all reality, this is true, but really? Of all my weaknesses, she chose THAT one? How about, "Sarcastic Overflowth from register" or "A.D.D creates hostile enviroment for small children"?

Overall, I got a cool 97 as my employee grade. In my book, that is best grade I've gotten without cheating, so I was thrilled.

"Bob" then walks in the office and decides to stick his old nose where it doesn't belong.

"Whatcha doing, Mentor?"

"D's quarterly evaluation. She's being promoted from seasonal to part time."

"Evaluation, eh? You had BETTER put "Talks too much" as a weakness. I mean it! *stabs paper to death with finger* This girl is a trouble maker. If she could scan as much as she talks, she'd be a star employee! Humpf!"

Steam pours out of my ears. This sexist jackass loathes me. How he is able to walk around and talk, without being propped up, is beyond me. He's convinced everyone that he is deaf, but I have my doubts. It seems as though he is working some ancient Chinese torture on me. Instead of slowly pouring drop of water on my dehydrated forehead, he is popping up when I least want him to and spouting sexist waste onto my life.

"Mentor" sighes and scribbles down that I talk. Anything to shut the Bob up. That knocks my score to a 92. Either way, I passed the evaluation, but it just kills me that he had to pull his usual stunt.

Here's hoping the diarrhea fairy makes a stop at his home and leaves him with the gift that keeps on giving!Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-55625041747217449272009-01-05T19:18:00.003-05:002009-01-05T19:55:08.459-05:00"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"Frustration was beating me senseless. My register has froze yet again and I was stuck restarting the 20 year old system.

The poor guy (who we shall call "#2") on the register next to me decided to see if there was anything he could do. While doing so, an East Indian man and his wife walk through #2's line.

Acknowledging the man, I smile and tell him,

"Sir, we're having some technical difficulty, but if you'll give us just a sec, he'll be over here to help you."

The man throws his hands up in the air, rolls his eyes, and shouts in an unfriendly tone, "This is ridiculous!"

He then drags his wife to my register where I inform him, yet again, that someone is coming to the register he was on. The moment the words left my lips, #2 runs to his cubical and tells them he is ready and apologizes.

The man once again, throws his fists up in the air, except this time, he shouted his hateful words in his native tongue.

Marching, chin in the air, the man ends up at the customer service desk where the store manager just happens to be working. I hear him say several times that he would sue both #2 and I for racism and that we refused to help him because of his appearance.

Buddy, I hope you sue us. We work for minimum wage in a run down part of town. I don't have a car and live at home. The court might require me to hand over my McDonald's giftcard, but that's about all your getting outta me. Good luck with that.

He parting words, as he was checked out through #2's line was the following, "Oh, I see! NOW I'm privileged enough to have your service!"

Somehow, I don't think this is what Gandhi had in mind when he starved for India's independence.....
Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-62391307576046982742009-01-04T21:54:00.003-05:002009-01-04T22:18:21.709-05:00"Mi nombre es cajero. ¿Cómo puedo ayudarle?""You wanna go on your 15 minute break now?"

"Ummmm...do you even have to ask?"

Before I could shut my register light off, a little old hispanic lady whips into my line and throws her one item onto the counter.

Sighing heavily, I scanned the one pair of reading glasses and told her that total was $14.38.

Within seconds, the lady has poured an entire purse full of coins onto the counter and in Spanish instructs me to count out what I need.

Now, I don't speak Spanish fluently, but if spoken slow enough, I am able to understand the conversation and might even be able to respond with one of 7 known phrases.

This lady denied my request to slow down her speech and spoke at 70 mph, leaving me in a cloud of confusion.

I counted out about $10 in nickels, dimes, and quarters.

At my store, we are instructed to ALWAYS count large amounts of change out on the counter so that the camera can see everything. That way, if the customer turns around and says that we stole from them, they have the evidence on tape of what they paid, laid out.

So there I was, desperately trying to make the lady understand how much she owes in my best high school spanish.

Finally after she pulled change from her purse, pockets of her jeans and coat, she needed just $2.38 left.

In slow-mo, I watched her reach back into her change purse, and pull out an untold amount of dollar bills waded up and gave the remaining amount.

Even better, in that wade, I saw a fresh, brand spankin' new $20 bill staring right at me.

All this took a total of 15 minutes. Had I been a split second quicker going on my break, I could have avoided the whole thing.

Later it dawned on me why the whole event occurred....she simply needed to get rid of change. So I was the victim of her wrath.

When the $20 winked at me from her purse, I almost Starky and Hutched my way over the register to price check her eyes out.

It's a harsh world and I don't get paid enough to be a hero.
Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-43659541290026480242009-01-01T14:23:00.003-05:002009-01-01T16:28:39.182-05:00All the kids are doing it...It was a couple of days before Christmas and my line was crazy.

When I clocked in, I was informed by the manager that the entire store was out of regular sized bags. Instead, the cashier's would have to make due with the teenie tiny bags that are for cd's and jewelry OR the HUGE bags that were made for third world countries or smuggling large amounts of watermelons.

So for the people who buy a ton of medium sized items...you are just out of luck.

A creepy, thin man walks through my line with a buggy overflowing with boxes of Little Debbie Christmas Tree snack cakes. He looked like a grey headed Steve Buscemi.

Immediately, he informs me that he didn't count the boxes.

Seriously!?! Now I've got to count the boxes individually with my line backed up and countless pairs of eyes rolling in the back of their heads.

46. Read that again....The man bought 46 boxes of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Snack Cakes. 46.

One of the cool cartboys told me later that he even asked one of the floor workers to get him the ones we had in stock.

His total was over $130 for those interested.....

My curiousity got the best of me during the transaction:

"So...are these for you students or a boy scouts event?"

"No. Why?"

*awkward silence*

"Oh...no reason."

Does anyone else find 46 boxes of snack cakes suspicious, or is it just me? Is there a new way to make meth using Christmas Tree cakes that I've not yet been informed of?

What a bizarre job I work.....Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-8039546230597418292008-12-31T22:48:00.002-05:002009-01-01T00:04:00.825-05:00A Sigh-Worthy New YearSo, I am thrilled to be moved from 'seasonal' to 'part-time' at my store...but it turns out that thanks to the new year, my hours have been cut...Yeah! I went from 20 hours a week to 10.

So for a bit, I'll be reduced to having to do stories of the past 3 months. Then again...one weekend at my work, is like a lifetime of laughs.

We'll play it by ear, eh?

Happy New Years Everyone!Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-82489589816563813412008-12-29T12:28:00.004-05:002008-12-29T12:57:21.859-05:00Is that a bunny in a boiling pot of water?!?I am sad to announce that I cheated. Yes, I am a retail store adulterer.

After arriving in Alabama to visit family, I realize that I have forgotten the one job I had for this gathering. The gift.

It slipped my mind completely. Of course, I remember with only an hour to spare. Frantically racing across the Alabama/Mississppi line, I have my first sinful thought.

There, glowing like the north star, is the same retail store that I work at begging me to see what the grass on the other side looks like. I might have shaken the thought, but then the image of my 10% discount flashed across my mind sending my turn signal on and my car racing.

The moment my foot is in the door, I stop in amazement. This is no regular store. This is the Nirvana of all retail stores.

The cashiers actually had someone who would bring them change or do price checks! Those same cashiers looked thrilled to be there! The lights worked properly and none of them pulsed above your head as if sending some unknown Morse code message is being sent. Objects were placed in their proper locations!

I felt like a cheater when I left, gift in hand. I had crossed over to the dark side.

This store made mine look like a kitten next to a tiger.

But, oh, it felt so good to be bad....Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-66052661468518023852008-12-24T22:47:00.000-05:002008-12-24T23:26:46.081-05:00Tis the Season!Unlike the majority of the stores in town, my store decided to rebellious and stay open till the wee hours of 10. Even the almighty Wal*Mart was closed by then.

At 9:55 p.m. the closing announcement was proclaimed and the herds of bargain shopping cows decided to finally give up. Slowly grazing to the front, they pile their stuff on the counter.

One particular couple bought $33 worth of stuff and then the drama begins...

"I have $5 on this particular bank card can I just use it? You know...just to get all the cash off of it."

I sighed lightly trying to hide my annoyance. I understand that the holidays are tough for everyone, but this kinda stuff just kills me. At my particular store, if you try to scan your card first, the register will take the total amount off. If the funds aren't on the card, it will simply decline the card.

Trying to explain this to the lady, I can see the confusion of my words twisting her face into a scowl.

Her husbands trys to explain what I had said as well, and still, she remained confused.

Finally, she seems to understand the concept and in slow motion, I watch her hand me two $20's.

Now it was my turn to be confused. Why would you make it complicated if you had the money? *sigh*

The lady then tries to do the unthinkable. I cannot fully explain in words the exact idea, but somehow she wanted me to split the cost of into thirds using only 2/3rd's for the total, and give her the remaining....

At this point, she loses her mind. Literally, she flings her purse onto the table and yells over the crowd for me to go, and I quote, "Fuck myself".

The registers for the first time, quiet to an amazing hush. All eyes are on me and my reaction. Oh, the possibilities were all there for disaster. Unfortunely for this lady, I was onto her little scheme and my stubborness refused to let me go down like a punk. Hell no! My skin is thicker then that.

Like that of a saint, I calmly hand her the change and bag her items with nothing less then a full "Eat shit and die" smile.

Turning towards her husbands, the following words leave my lips...

"Happy Holidays, SIR."

She whips around and calls me every name in the book for that, but it was all worth it.

Tis the season, I suppose. Speaking of which, I hope everyone has a great holiday. Stay safe and please, make sure to compliment your cashier.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-16709412141694419802008-12-23T15:00:00.000-05:002008-12-23T15:31:10.134-05:00Chinese ChristmasI know that I rant quite a bit in my blog and usually it is about the negatives to my job. However...occationally, I do encounter people that make my shift a lot easier through their kindness.

One such example happened the other night...

It was another stressful pre-holiday night with mostly tyrant shopper despritely trying to get as many bargains as possible.

A gentleman (probably in his late 60's) walks through my line with a teenager by his side. Like something out of a cheesy christmas Lifetime movie, his cheer was contagious and instant put me at ease.

"Hello there dear. Your going to be seeing quite a bit tonight. Hope you don't mind!"

He later went on to explain that he had 8 granddaughters. Years before, he realized that everyone was spending too much money on gifts for the holidays so he started a tradition where each of the grandchildren bought a gift for under $15. Then on Christmas Eve, they all draw numbers to figure out who gets what gift. He called it "Our Chinese Christmas".

His story was glowing after seeing and hearing all the whining about everyone elses problems.

"Honey, I hate to bother you, but do you mind double bagging her stuff? I got a bunch of nosy women in my house. They won't make it til' tomorrow if the peak!"

Laughing about the bag within a bag within another bag, I gave him his change and set him on his way.

Minutes later, the gentleman returns, another teenager by his side. smiling as if this was the most fun they'd had ever.

"Howdy again! This is granddaughter #2! Don't hint at what #1 got cause they are all nosy."

This continued all the way to #8. By this point, I looked forward to seeing this man and his family. They seemed to generally understand the idea behind the holidays and their cheer was starting to rub off on me.

Finally, the whole crew walks through my line where the man proclaims with the enthusiasm of a child.

"Everyone make sure you thank this young lady! She has been the most help an old man could ask for. Sweetie, I'd like to introduce you to my soulmate, this is my wife. You and her have a lot in common, you know. You both have the patience of a god."

The sea of grandchildren part to reveal the most classy lady I've ever seen. The lines framing her face speak of only laughter and wisedom beyond my comprehension.

Even after clocking out or the night...this family's presence made an impression on me. I hope they had the best Chinese Christmas of all time. I also hope that they grandchildren let this tradition continue through the next generation.

It gave me hope, something there is just too little of.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-74394161559250257712008-12-23T00:44:00.000-05:002008-12-23T01:15:21.521-05:00Happy Fracking Holiday!Tonight was just a strange night for cashier's around the world. I don't have solid facts to this exaggeration, but if it was anything like my night...as strange....

Let me start off by saying that I do not celebrate Christmas and will only acknowledge it's existence to small children. It isn't my job to crush their dreams. We'll leave that to the schoolyard bully and/or their own parents. So when people leave my register with a "Merry Christmas!"...I ALWAYS reply, "Happy Holidays."

It is my way of being polite without covering up my beliefs that Christmas is a load of crap and should be banished from history from this day on....

So, I started an experiment to see if I can correctly guess the number of people who will call me out on this. My guess tonight was 3. I was off my 5.

8 people stopped to question my saying, "Happy Holiday's" instead of the traditional greeting. Most were simply curious, but some acted as if I had broken some untold law of St. Nick.

One man in particular thought it would make him seem stoic to question me in front of a line FULL of customers.

"Merry Christmas young lady!"

"Happy Holidays to you sir."

"What?...I'm more of a Merry Christmas kinda guy myself."

"*deep sigh of frustration* Interesting...I'm more of a "Holidays" kinda gal, but we're all different."

"I don't really care what you are...It's technically Christmas...You can't take CHRIST outta Christmas. Our ancestors....Blah...Blah Blah...Blah..."

Another occasion was enough to make me physically laugh out loud , losing my composure completely.

"Merry Christmas!"

"Happy Holidays"

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes mam. Whatcha' need?"

"Are you being held down by the man?"

Trying despritely not to crack a grin, I squeezed out a "Mam, it is my own personal choice. The only thing the man is holding down is my paycheck."

Needless to say...it was an interesting night.

My question is, "When did America become so one-sided that we can only accept those who fulfill the requirements of the majority and their views?"

Forgive my need for change, but I will continue to say "Happy Holidays" until the 'Man' hands back all the money I've spent on tuition, taxes, gas, and Starbucks coffee.

So from this cashier to you....

Happy Frackin' Holidays!Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-76115085643230097212008-12-15T00:39:00.000-05:002008-12-15T00:58:25.273-05:00It's the best time of the year!I apologize for not writing for awhile. Hellsville has been booming with the crazies and I'm not even sure where to begin.

Just to give you the cliffnote version of the last two weeks.

-Starting January 1st, I will officially be promoted from seasonal to *gasp* part time. I was quite thrilled by the advancement of my career and perhaps will move up even further if I continue to kiss the managers asses daily.

-I have decided that the General Manager, to whom we'll call Bob, of the mystery store I frequently dwell, is a sexist douchbag. Rumor is that 5 years ago, one of the associates got him so stressed that he had a stroke in the store. My official mission in life is cause his next. Muhahahaha!

-I am slowly learning that their are several types of shoppers and I will have to take the time later to post them all.

-Cart boys are whiners. Yes, I said it. They are the biggest babies of them all. I have been on my feet for six hours dealing with psychotic bargain shoppers. I don't give a damn that it's sprinkling outside and you don't want to mess up you new Converse. Push your buggies and leave your insistant whines for someone who does less then you.

-Christmas is the devil's holiday. Nothing good can come from fat free egg nogg and glittery ornaments that only leave little shiny pellets all over me and my register.

That's it folks. That's just about it. I have a few quaint stories to pass along and post at a later date.

-Cashier-Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-11271204461358771372008-11-27T20:01:00.000-05:002008-11-27T20:45:51.764-05:00Gobble Gobble...Really now?You would think that the holidays would bring out the best in people, but it's really quite the opposite.

Customer become raging maniac's when it comes to them and their money.

Case in point...

The store I work at had a HUGE Thanksgiving sell today. I was lucky enough to only have to work the afternooin shift, but it was busy none the less.

On several cases, I found myself face to face with some of the rudest people you could possible imagine. I had a man literally throw money in my face in order to avoid spending another minute in my line. On another occasion, a women in my line decided to tell someone at another register to shut her kid up.

Amazing when you really start to think about it. What is it about these times that makes people go crazy. It's as if we get so caught up in the image, that we forget to stop and take a breather.

I for one, am thankful for...

-Debit/Credit Cards (making my life 10x easier)
-15 minute breaks. (A life savor.)
-Patient people (They make my job bareable)
-the Scan-gun thingy-doodle. (allowing me to feel like the Cash-inator 24/7 and giving me the satifaction of imaging scanning bitchy customers to oblivion)

Things I am not thankful for...

-Screaming children. (Please, either take the time to quiet them or be considerate enough to come back at another time.)
-Price checks. (You know who you are. One price check? Cool. Two price checks? Okay. 8 price checks? Shananigans!)
-Grunters. (When I say "Hello. How are you today?" and all I get is a grunt, it only says one thing. You are so exceptionally rude that you cannot manage to inhale the brutal air to say something back so instead you will create an internal noise in order to prevent yourself from having any sort of conversation.)
-Those who insist on paying a $20 purchase with change.

Happy Gobble Gobble Day.

-Cashier-Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-76617765621632662982008-11-23T23:34:00.000-05:002008-11-23T23:46:52.007-05:00Seriously?Thanks to hard economic times, there is a new trend quickly taking flight. The ability to pay for large items, solely with small bills or coins, is the new black.

Yesterday, a lady goes through my line to pay off her credit card. I pull up the program to do such activity on my register and then am blown away with what happens next.

The lady lays down a bank bag with $400 in ones. The best part? I have to manually count every single one to confirm the total.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have, by far, the worst case of A.D.D possible, so to have to count ones and be expected to keep up with the numbers is rediculous.

Then, today an older women pays for her purchase with $20 worth of quarters in a ziplock bag.

The economy is bad, but please keep in mind that your cashier HAS to count every coin and/or bill to make sure they have the right amount.

Don't make me want to shove those quarters up your nose or give you dollar cuts. It's not a pretty sight.Cupcakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10166842179259127901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252671345331131023.post-66523500386827861632008-11-21T11:29:00.000-05:002008-11-21T11:43:43.527-05:00Hell with a price check...When I walked into work yesterday, everything seemed to be going relatively smoothly. The other cashiers were still smiling and the new girl being trained, wasn't in fetal position crying.

Convincing myself that these were signs of a good night, I open my register and turned on the glowing light of death.

I don't know what it is about people feeling the need to race over to a newly opened register, but it's like a scene from a WWE fight. Buggies plow into each other, obscene words are thrown out, children are shoved in order to get a head of the competitor...it's pure madness.

A couple walk up (both heavier set) and chunk their stuff onto the counter. Neither of them answer my routine question of "How are you?", which leads me to believe that manners are not a requirement to shop here.

The lady purchases a pair of lepard print thong underwear which only brought repulsive images to my already exhausted brain.

Shaking off the terror, I continue with their purchases only to find that the man of the house has bought, not one, but THREE boxes of jumbo condoms.

Your own jokes can be inserted into this particular scene, but mine was simple.
